A conversation between two people is meant to be fun or interesting. Just by giving simple one-word answers like “Yes” and “No” or even just answering the question shortly can make a conversation very boring.
We can keep a conversation going not only by asking questions, but also, we can give short, simple responses to show how you feel about the conversation.
Please have a read of this conversation below:
Tom: Hi Tom.
Jerry: Hi Jerry.
Tom: How are you?
Jerry: I am good. How are you?
Tom: I am OK.
Jerry: What sport do you like?
Tom: I like baseball. What sport do you like?
Jerry: I like soccer.
Tom: What vegetable do you like?
Jerry: I like carrots. What fruit do you like?
Tom: I like apples.
Jerry: See you.
Tom: See you.
When you read this conversation, it sounds quite boring, isn't it?
Now, let's see whether there is a difference when extra responses, in bold, are added in the same conversation.
Tom: Hi Tom.
Jerry: Hi Jerry.
Tom: How are you?
Jerry: I am good. How are you?
Tom: I am OK.
Jerry: What sport do you like?
Tom: I like baseball.
Jerry: Really, you like baseball too? Me too!
Do you like soccer too?
Tom: No, I don't. I am not good at soccer.
Jerry: That's OK. Speaking of sports, I am very hungry now. Do you like vegetables?
Tom: No, I don't, but I like fruit.
Jerry: So, what fruit do you like?
Tom: I like apples.
Jerry: I see. Nice!
